AI agents read websites mostly through the raw HTML and accessibility structure, not the visual design. A site is agent-ready when its key content is in the initial HTML, its headings and links are descriptive, its structured data describes the business accurately, its forms have proper labels, and its robots rules deliberately allow the AI crawlers it wants.
Picture a customer telling their AI assistant, "Find me a plumber in Denver who can come today and book the earliest slot." The assistant does not admire your hero video. It reads your page, looks for hours, service area and a way to book, and moves on the second it gets confused.
Google's own 2026 guidance on optimizing for generative AI features says the foundation is still good SEO. Agents add one more layer: they need to be able to use your site, not just read it.
The five-minute test
- View the source. Right-click, view page source and search for your main heading and phone number. If they are not there, many AI systems cannot see them. See JavaScript SEO.
- Check robots.txt. Are you blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot by accident? Use our AI crawler checker.
- Score the page. Run it through our machine-readability analyzer.
- Tab through your form. If a keyboard user cannot tell what each field is, an agent cannot either. Read agent-ready forms.
- Ask an assistant about you. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity what your business does and where. Wrong answers point to thin or inconsistent information.
What to fix first
- Put your core facts in plain HTML text: what you do, where, hours, phone, pricing guidance.
- Add connected structured data for your business, services and FAQs. Validate it with our schema validator.
- Publish an llms.txt file with our generator.
- Label every form field and button with real words.
We build every site this way. Ours included: view the source of this page and you will find every answer in plain HTML. For the strategy side of AI visibility, see AI search optimization.
